Psychiatric manifestations of dengue fever- a case report from Pakistan

A 29-year-old male presented to Aga Khan University Hospital with complaints of fever, body-aches, vomiting and one episode gum bleeding. Dengue antigen test done prior presentation was positive. He admitted for medical management. During hospital stay, the patient developed manic symptoms including over-talkativeness, expansive mood, disinhibited behavior, excessive planning, paranoia aggression. remained oriented time, place person neurological examination unremarkable. managed anti-psychotics benzodiazepines, his psychiatric improved improvement in condition. This case highlights possibility manifestations occurring context a dengue infection.

We reviewed case records of 40 in-patients (22 boys) with serologically confirmed dengue fever between 1st October and 30th November, 2013. Severe dengue was seen in 30, out of which 12 (30%) had compensated shock. Splenomegaly (6,15%) and encephalopathy (4,10%) were the commonest atypical features.
